Dance demands extreme range of motion (ROM) through the hip and lumbar spine while maintaining aesthetically pleasing lines. When not well controlled, repeated high ROM activities cause translatory or shearing forces, ultimately resulting in soft tissue and bone stress injuries. For the hip, dancers commonly experience stability deficits, labral tears, and tendinopathies. For the spine, disc and facet injuries are common, as are the dreaded pars fracture/spondylolisthesis injuries. For youth, our role is to prioritize education about and prevention of these injuries, while still supporting patient and family goals.
The incidence of hip/spine injuries in dancers will be discussed. Case studies will reinforce recognition and treatment via real-world examples. Protocols already developed for youth athletes will be specifically applied to the dance population. Therapeutic exercises will be presented that help in the development of a healthy lumbopelvic/hip region able to move through a ROM while maintaining stability.
Continuing Education Credits Anticipated: APTA (PT), AOTA (OT), BOC (AT) CME (MD/PA)
