This course explores the collaborative approach between physical therapists, occupational therapists and athletic trainers in soccer rehabilitation. We will examine injury epidemiology, review injury prevention screening protocols, and outline the phases of rehabilitation with practical drills applicable in both clinical and field settings. The role of load management in rehabilitation will be addressed, along with strategies for effective collaboration between disciplines to optimize outcomes for soccer athletes.

  • Identify at least two appropriate exercises based on the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) & FIFA-11 Injury Prevention Program for injury prevention
  • List at least two rationales for utilizing the neurocognitive application for rehabilitation
  • Define load progression and its impact on return to play

Jennifer Green, PT, DPT, CSCS has over 22 years of experience in sports/orthopedic rehabilitation, gait analysis, and strength and conditioning. For two decades, she served as the PT for the New England Revolution, providing evaluations, injury and return-to-play management. Her work with elite athletes was complemented by her collaborative efforts with athletic trainers, physicians, and performance coaches to optimize player health and performance. Jennifer is based out of the MGB – Spaulding Framingham site and is a contributor to the Spaulding National Running Center and Mass General Brigham Sports Medicine program. She has supported the Spaulding Marathon team for over 20 years providing care to runners of all abilities. She is passionate about treating injuries and bridging the gap between competition and wellness. She enjoys working with all ages, including adolescent athletes, many of whom she has successfully coached to achieve their goals of playing at all collegiate levels.

Philip Madore, MS, ATC, LAT, PES, ITAT is an experienced athletic trainer with over two decades of expertise in sports medicine. Phil began his career working with high school athletes. He later joined the New England Revolution, spending eight seasons delivering daily medical care and designing individualized injury-prevention and post-surgical rehabilitation programs. Throughout his career, Phil has collaborated closely with physicians and physical therapists to optimize recovery, enhance performance, and facilitate safe return-to-play protocols. His academic credentials include a Masters in Exercise Science with a concentration in Performance Enhancement and Injury Prevention from California University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelors in Athletic Training from Springfield College. Phil has delivered presentations on interprofessional concussion management, emergency preparedness, and advanced rehabilitation strategies for return to sport.

Christina Ruggeri, PT, DPT, NCS earned her DPT at the MGH IHP in 2018 and practices at the Spaulding Outpatient Center in Salem, MA where she is experienced in caring for patients with a variety of medically complex conditions and injuries. Christina is a member of the Spaulding North Shore Innovative Sports Medicine Team and performs aquatic therapy, wheelchair evaluations, and brace clinic. Christina assists with adaptive kayaking and adaptive golf through Spaulding’s Adaptive Sports program and advocates for the program to patients who may benefit. Christina also works per diem acute care at Salem Hospital.
